Assignment 2

Pjotr Sapegin's Madama Butterfly animation was an interesting rendition of the opera. I believe it artistically showed it in by revealing the true intentions of the male main character. In the beginning of the video is Madame Butterfly and her husband having sex, which is what all he really wanted from her. Even from the original opera, he says that the marriage is only temporary just so he can do as he likes. After they're done, he leaves his hat with her and leaves. Poor Butterfly is left waiting and believing that her husband truly loves her and will be back for her. I find it interesting that she seems to remain in the same state and clothes as when he left her. I believe that's because she wishes to remain in a this state of love and trust that she had with her husband.
Soon it is revealed that she pregnant. The animation displays her pregnancy as her belly as a fish bowl, and her child as a fish. I find this a bit odd, but nevertheless, art. When the child is born, it turns into a child but is still attached to Butterfly by the umbilical cord. I believe that represents the bond between the mother and the child. It displays their closeness and love for each other.
Finally, her husband comes back and Butterfly eagerly awaits him only to find out that he has a new wife from America. He only came back for his child and by doing so he rips the umbilical cord. It represents Butterfly's pain of losing her beloved child. Heartbroken, she tears herself apart, which I believe coincides with her committing suicide in the opera.

Overall, I thought this showed the main points and true intentions of the opera. I found it very strange, but I liked the opera better.
